Business: The Degree for Life

Business is a very popular subject and field. The reason why is because what you learn as you work towards completing a business degree is highly transferable and can be used through just about every stage in your life. Being a good business person means that you can use these skills repeatedly, helping yourself and family while improving your standard of living. Because business is a vast field, with many programs and associated careers, there are many different business degree concentrations one can pursue.

Though today’s economy is highly advanced and complicated, many key foundations remain the same- there are resources that people need, people own, and people must trade, buy, or sell to exchange for them. The United States has over 23 million businesses and not all of them are successful. The difference between successful and unsuccessful businesses can be attributed to many things, such as luck, organization, and talent. The most successful businesses usually have a few things in common: great leadership, a useful product or service, great innovation- to name a few qualities.

A lot of these qualities can be inherent or they can also be learned. Business graduates have a head start in performing their specialized tasks for their companies over non-business graduates simply because they are more trained in these particular skill sets. The curriculum they were enrolled in prepared them to succeed in their respective field and business is a highly expansive area containing many fields- meaning there are many opportunities for those with business degrees.

But there’s another added bonus in getting your business degree: you become more prepared to manage a business of your own. In this high-speed society, one may encounter numerous business opportunities in one’s life, and generally the business graduate is more inclined to pinpoint, understand, and take advantage of these opportunities. This is because the training one receives at business school forges a different mindset, where one understands the markets and is able to capitalize on their trends.

For example, when the stock market crashed in late 2008, a lot of financial sector jobs were eliminated. But, there were still opportunities for these people. Some knew how to day-trade and go into personal business ventures. However, in other industries, such as technology, most people needed to re-tool and find jobs in other sectors altogether.

There are also times when good business people can crossover into other fields and even help grow them. Take for instance highly skilled areas, such as healthcare and technology. To expand a pediatrics office or to market the newest microchip technology takes a team with strong business savy- regardless of how great the product and service is. To market the product and service, to develop it, to manage the financials- this all takes sound business IQ- which is typically developed in school and training.

Business is among the most popular and diverse degrees schools offer today and its continued popularity is well-deserved. As long as there is an economy that exchanges resources, there will always be a need for a business degree. Even the latest technologies cannot replace the need for great business people- which is why a degree in business is one worth having.
